I know it seems unlikely but I have so many things that I want to say that I don’t. Matt and Automattic control dotorg (which I have no problem with) and if I make too many people over there upset I can kiss goodbye any chance at making meaningful change.
However, saying nothing is almost worst. I can just hope that people will understand that my opinions, while often critical, are meant to push WordPress forward. We’re stuck in a rut and I think we need to shake things up a bit.
Please Jetpack, stop making embed blocks. Just stop. They aren’t helpful. Even with the blocks where you are creating a customizable interface you are just reengineering the one provided by the service you are embedding. There are so many more blocks that are needed that it’s not the right time for embeds.
The only reason I created Whatever was to hopefully stop embed blocks from being built. Embed blocks never offer more options or customizations than the original service’s embed interface. We aren’t really adding anything by moving those features over to WordPress. I get that using an HTML block to put in an embed code is scary but I hopefully addressed that by building Whatever.
Instead of adding an embed block I would much rather see people build native solutions to replace that service all together. That’s ultimately what users want. If we are trying to convince people that blocks are the future we aren’t going to impress them with embeds. We have to allow them to do things with blocks that they’ve never been able to do before.
