Deciding which block to build

I think it’s safe to say I have no problem coming up with block ideas. I have more ideas on a daily basis than I could ever have built. Where I struggle is with what block to build. The first block I ever released was called Guidepost, a table of contents block. I love it for sentimental reasons but I’ll never make another one like it again.

The theory behind the block was sound. I felt it was something that so many people could benefit from. That’s the issue. It was so mainstream that it didn’t take long before people were making their own versions of it. I looked the other day and the sheer number of table of content blocks is staggering. That made me a little upset but not for the reasons you’d think.

I don’t care that someone made the same thing as me, even if they did only after seeing my block. It’s GPL people can do whatever they want and no one can have a monopoly on ideas. What makes me upset is block duplication. We aren’t even close to total block saturation. There is no need for multiples of the same block. I wish people would make unique blocks, blocks that don’t currently exist, instead of just releasing a block that is super similar to another one.

Now when I decide which blocks to build I try to choose ones that are a bit more niche. Blocks that will only exist because I created them. That’s exciting to me. Is it the best business model? Probably not, but it’s the only way I know how to be. Next time you are thinking about making a block that already exists STOP and think does the world really need another one of these.
